I bought this book based off a recommendation from a friend. I was wondering at the time why pay for a book of reviews when I can find them free online? After reading through a few of them it became clear this is not just boring movie opinions. The author clearly knows all aspects of the art of movie making. His reviews were not just hilarious in most cases, but extremely informative. I learned a great deal about directors and cinematography from this wonderful read. This book actually plays out as a sort of autobiography of the author. It's a look into his life and the movies that influenced it most. Although I may not have agreed with every review, it was rare I did not. I still appreciated the insight in to some of the movies I already love or even disliked. Videobilly is a worthy "go to" review source. This is not just a movie review book. It is a book written for those that love film for more than just entertainment.Product details

A good, heartfelt review of some of VideoBilly's most beloved films.
Russell is right--who needs a phone for bathroom reading when you can flip through this gem? Sure, everyone scrolls their phone, but this actually led to something for me post bathroom. I purchased this to amuse myself on the can and now I actually want to watch a bunch of these movies. Not-your-avereage-movie-guide, "VideoBilly's Must-See Movies" is entertaining and accomplished in that it combines perspectives from both your-average-joe movie watcher and your typical film-snob/buff for entertaining reviews about movies you've never heard of, have always wanted to see, and now definitely will watch. Highly recommend! (plus, it's a fun gift, as I just gave it as a birthday present). -V.Ramos
This was a fun read! I'm always looking for more movies to add to my watch list and this was the perfect way to get some suggestions. VideoBilly's thoughtful, hilarious, and fresh perspective also made me want to go back and re-watch movies I hadn't thought about in years. As soon as I read the Alien review, I just had to watch it. I love the author's personal touch to the book, too. It feels like you're having a casual conversation with a good friend who loves and appreciates movies. You can tell he really loves the craft of film-making but doesn't take himself, or the book, too seriously. I loved it from cover to cover! I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves movies or just likes to laugh while reading on the toilet.
I have to say, this is pretty much the perfect bathroom book. Each review serves as a self-contained story, and they read well in any order. It's the kind of book I can just crack open to any page and start reading, without worrying if I'm committing to having my legs fall asleep. It's also invaluable to have something to fall back on for bathroom reading other than the back of a shampoo bottle.
Billy's reviews are thoughtful, and personal. I enjoy not just learning about movies I really need to see, but seeing old classics through the author's eyes. It'll be difficult to watch Robocop the same way again.
Overall, this was money well spent. I'm looking forward to VideoBilly's next book!
Part film reviews part autobiography, Video Billy's 101 Must-See Movies explores well known classics as well as obscure gems to tell the story of the author's love of film. The reviews are insightful and well researched. But what sets this book apart from other collections of reviews are the personal touches Mr. Russell includes. Personal anecdotes pepper the reviews including the author's lengthy pre-streaming video search for a copy of the Coen Brothers' film Blood Simple, the author's reflection on how his views of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial have matured as he has and the hilarious recounting of a high five offered to and denied by Tommy Wiseau director of the so bad it's good cult classic The Room.
The reviews are detailed while being short enough to enjoy in one "sitting". I have to confess I tried leaving the book in the bathroom as the author suggested, but I tend to op for checking my phone in those moments. Now it's on my coffee table instead where I'll pick it up and read a review or two when the fancy hits me.
This an excellent book for anyone who loves film. It gave me new insights into films I've already seen and added several more to my list of movies to see. Pick up a copy today. You won't be disappointed.
I have been keeping this book, as the author suggests, in the bathroom. It's so much better than perusing the depressing news on your phone. I used to look at Donald Trump's twitter feed while on the toilet. Why? To make myself depressed? Then I would come out of the bathroom in a bad mood. Now I just read this book and flip open to a review of Jurassic Park or LA Confidential. The reviews aren't too long and they're not too short. You won't have to linger too long in the bathroom to finish a review. As a busy mom, this is important to me. I'm pretty sure I've read all the reviews in this book since getting it, which means that I have pooped about 101 times. It's a great read and it'll give you something to talk about when you're done reading. I highly recommend it! It's the #1 Number Two book out there.
